How Much Steel Do You Need? A Homeowner's Guide to Rebar Calculations

Steel requirement in RCC construction is usually expressed as a percentage of concrete volume, and that percentage varies a lot by structural member. Slabs run lean — around 0.8%–1% — because they mostly resist bending over a wide area. Columns run much higher, 2%–2.5%, because they carry compressive load down the full height of the building and need substantial vertical reinforcement plus ties.

Beams sit in between, typically 1.5%–2%, split between bottom bars (tension), top bars (compression), and stirrups that resist shear near the supports. Footings are leaner again, similar to slabs, since the load is distributed into the soil below.
